Here is a Victorian settle which was rescued from a reclamation yard. The mice had made a real mess of the seat, and with it only being re upholstered once in nearly 130 years, I knew i had my work cut out for me . Firstly I had to get every thing off the frame ( 2 days ,and a lovely letter from a mother to her son while he was away at boarding school). Then I set to work on the stunning carving on the frame cleaning it then sympathetically french polishing it as not to give it the new look.
Finally i was ready to start upholstering this unique piece of furniture .
It wasn’t a difficult choice on what to put on it as while I was stripping it out i found some of the original leather so matched it the best we could given the changes to hide over the decades . All the Hessian’s had rotted and as mentioned the mice had gone through the seat stuffing’s, other than that the insides were in good condition and were put back in as you just cant throw them away.
The leather is from JMT CREST LEAHER and is known as old english hazel. We decided to use a combination of braid and studs which i think is keeping of the style.
